“Covenant of Mayors.”
European initiative for climate protection
28-29 May2009
Council chamber, the Cracow City Council
Plac Wszystkich Świętych 3/4

The Covenant of Mayors is an ambitious initiative of the European Commission designed for all European cities that would like to both join the fight against climate change and increase the comfort of living of their citizens. Mayors of the pioneering European cities that have signed the Covenant committed themselves to take actions concerning local sustainable energy management that will make them go beyond the EU objective which is 20% reduction in CO2 emission by the year 2020.
The firs ceremony of signing the Covenant of Mayors took place on the 10th of February 2009 in Brussels and was a part of the European Sustainable Energy Week. The covenant was formally signed by 364 European cities, including only 4 Polish cities: Bielsko-Biała, Łubianka, Niepołomice and Warszawa.
The conference aims at promoting the Covenant of Mayors concept and encouraging Polish municipalities to join the initiative and take up actions for climate protection. Experiences of Polish and European municipalities whose authorities have already signed the Covenant will be presented during the conference.
